Let me know what you think about the royal kona. When they were owned by Superior in Chicago, the quality was much better than it is now. The president then ( now sr VP of Sara Lee Corp), is an old school buddy. The problem I have with many of these companies, is the roast. Its very light roast with little flavor. Light roast means fewer beans to make up the weight.

Talked to a number of growers last night at a party here for Sen. Inouye. I bent his ear a little but he gave me a good idea about the fruit park. Think about it off saddle road.
That opens a lot of possibilities! We talked too about an old friend who passed aaway years ago who was the head of the congressional photographers office. I turned down that job in 1969 or 70 when our friend retired.
Take care

I really don't have any high expectations for the Royal Kona 100% Kona if their 10% blends are any indication. Since they're now owned by the company that also owns Lion Coffee, it doesn't surprise me. The quality of Lion Coffee's products went downhill after it was sold by the original owner.

A fruit park somewhere on Saddle Road may work depending on where it's located on the highway. I assume it'll be closer to the Kona side of the island since most of the tourists stay on the Kona side of the island.

Im not sure where it would be if on saddle Road. Guess it depends on who gives us 100 acres to play with!

The problem with all the blends is that it is 10% lowest grade kona coffee and 90% junk from vietnam or costa rica. No wonder visitorrs try it and go back to their maxwell house! Its amazing how many visitors to the coop will try ours and be surpriseed becasue the previous experience was with a blend.

been a long day,
take care

What's the soil like along the Saddle Road? If it's mostly lava rock you'll be doing a lot of hard digging!

One can pretty much figure out what the coffee will be like by the selling price. Knowing what high quality Kona beans go for per pound, one can determine the level of quality of beans in the package by its price. The 100% Royal Kona was on sale for $6.99/7oz. So, I've already determined that it's a very low grade Kona bean without opening the package.

Seems there is good soil along saddle road from what Ive seen. There are anumber of old abandoned
fields up there.
A lot depends on who we can get to buuy or donate the land. My preference would be to use the cold water technology and do it in a more convienient place than saddle but if dont right, people will come to see it.

Won't the cold water help produce better pitted fruits? If you can get access to some acreage there, you could also incorporate some research in the venture and add to the value of the enterprise. The attraction for the tourists is a given but it doesn't have to be on the Saddle Road.

I think using the cold water would be a plus bih for what we could grow and as an added incentive to visit the site. Once it get s a little closer, I may head over there and talk to John Craven about it. Should have been there today and tomorrow for the party I usually go too but too much to get done here.

The idea, aside from earning a living doing this, is to promote the industry as well as tourism. Doing it at the Natural Energy Lab should achieve both aims. Besides, who knows where the additional research may lead you.

Yep I agree. I think adding the cold water tech to the overall picture would be a great idea.
I know they want to do something there too.
They also have enough land. Now its a matter of getting $200 million to put it all together!
long day of working at the project site today.

Two hundred mil is a lot of money. Most projects in Hawaii don't start that big so you may as well lower your sights a bit and try it with a reduced scope. Once people see what you're doing and accomplishing raising funds should be easier. You can even try for a state grant of some kind if they can see the research potential of the project.

I said $200 million based on researching the financial systems revolving around the fruit parks in Japan 20 years ago.
If we are going to do it, it should be done right. When I think about the HTA and Debet budgets, it's not so much. Hell if we cut theirs in half for 2 years I'd have more than enough cash to build a 200 acre park!
I should say that all but one of hte parks are subsidized by local or prefectural governments. The one that does not get government money in Japan sells enough loquat and loquat products to make money. It was founded by the chiba highway department as a rest stop.

Hope your havinga good holiday,
i worked from 7am to 11 at the project site then came home and pased out until 3.

take care

>the cold water tech<

I've seen that term used in several recent messages, but I've never heard of it. Could you provide a one-sentence explanation of cold water tech or a pointer to a web site? (I did a little browsing, but didn't find anything that sounds like it might be what you're talking about.) It's interesting to follow this thread-- lots of things about a part of agriculture that are new to me. (Corn and soybeans as grown in the Midwest I grew up with, but vegetables, fruit and nuts in Hawaii are something else again.)

Thanks,
Dick

Well, if you think you can scrounge up that much from the government more power to you. But you will need to prepare a most convincing proposal because you will be competing with a lot of other folks from various sectors for that same tax dollar.

Things are relatively quiet here today. I suppose everyone's taking a holiday break.

No problem Dick!
Thee is a natural energy lab here in Kona which pumps up water from 2 miles deep in the ocean.
Its used for a nuber of things, desalinated to make fresh bottled water, raising cold water crustascians and even some salmon and other edible critters. There is a large company using to raise alge for vitamins.
Where it comes into ag is with a company called Common Heritage started by John Craven who's vision built the place years ago. Using the cold water through pipes in the hot air causes condensation and gives plenty of fresh water for irrigation. Run through the ground, it provides a cold chill needed for some types of fruit. Run though pipes in a container, it brings the temp down reducing the need for electricity for refrigeration.
Woul dbe interesting to work with this technology and learn much more about it and how it affects plants here.

kind of quiet here too, got to the farm for a short time before getting rained out.

I think once I get my sample park finished, then I'll get the pros to do a real fesability study and cost analisys. All I want to do is provide the groundwork and data
then manage the whole thing for a few years at some 6 figured salary <G>

Ah, I'd heard of using deep seawater in power generation schemes, but not in agriculture and aquaculture. I found the NELHA site (http://www.nelha.org/) and read a bit more. It sounds like an interesting thing to get involved in.

Thanks,

Okay, I'll buy that approach. All I've been saying is that you have to first convince the people who hold the purse that your idea is sound and viable. Once you get supporters on your side you can begin discussing the size of the purse. <g> But to get there you have to have something to show and that will take money to develop. Unless you're a multimillionaire I doubt that you have the personal resources to do it with your own money.
