I need to acquire a backup program for someone running Win XP Pro. It needs to be dead simple, as the person using that computer, while somewhat computer-knowledgeable, isn't an expert and has trouble with dexterity due to a tendon problem. The backup device will be an external USB drive. It would be useful if the software could do an incremental backup to minimize the time needed to do a backup. That computer currently has 15GB on its disk. Access to older versions of files isn't really an issue, just the assurance of a backup of the current disk contents.

I have found the new (2009) version of Acronis True Image to be much more stable than the versions 10 and 11. It can perform both full and incremental backups; and accommodate either an entire disk image or selected folders.

Unfortunately I have deleted all the old email messages re: the version 10 and 11 errors. One was the inability to "load a dynamic library." One was the inability to complete a backup of just my User Profile (not the entire disk). One was that the a scheduled incremental backup simply never started, and there were no entries in the error log.

Fortunately, the reports I was submitting were so detailed and relevant that one of their senior developers took pity on me, got fixes for those problems incorporated into "Version 2009," and sent me free copy. Sometimes calm responses and careful documentation pay off! "The fix for the issue reported by you in this ticket is included into the new product and we’re confident you’ll get it solved by installing it."

It bugs me that when Acronis went from TI 11 to 2009 (Vista compatible) they removed the ability to limit the number/size of a series of full backups.

They claim they've fixed it in the very recent (2008-11-24) 2009 Build #9646. But it doesn't work for me.

I still have the 53 email messages on this subject.

I'm not sure I understood that? Is this in their efforts to keep track of which backups you made for incremental / differential backups and so forth? Or is this a "you only get to make x full backups and then the product quits working"?

I dl'd the trial version of 2009, but it won't install under W2K. I backed off to the trial version 11 and it installed, but couldn't burn the .iso image. So I burned it myself only to find the trial version doesn't allow you to make a full backup.

All I want is the equivalent of Ghost to make and restore partition images (outside of Windows), but I haven't found that yet. Somewhat frustrating.

My understanding of that feature is that it is intended to limit the total disk space used for a series of backups so it does not impinge on the user's ability to store other kinds of files. When the total size of all backups gets too large, we are supposed to delete the old ones.

That's easy in ShadowProtect (which is a far better application in most respects). It can be done in TI 11, but not in TI 2009. The program doesn't break; it just won't observe limits.

I do it now with a batch file that deletes and renames..

Booting from the CD made with the full TI product will do what you want. TI's trial is purposely limited to not work with the System partition, for obvious reasons...

If you have a Maxtor or Seagate branded drive in the system, the free copy of the TI product that Maxtor/Seagate distribute will do this as well...

Check sites that sell older versions of software - even Version 9 should do what you ask and you may find it for less than the current product...

That was something else I didn't like. There didn't seem to be any way to do a backup without going through the GUI. I could live with that - it just wouldn't be as convenient as the four line .bat file I use with Ghost. Kurt

As long as it has the thirty day limit embedded, what's the issue? See, I'm using the trial version to see if it will work with my hardware. It already broke once on that as I said. Maybe it won't break on a partition backup, but how can I tell? I'll check out Drive Image - sounds exactly like what I want, and the price is the same as discounted version of TI 11. Thanks. Kurt

Those folks shouldn't need to know about backups. They just know to leave the computer on all night.

There is no time limit on the boot CD, instead there is the restrictin that it does not work on the System volume. Think about why. If it did, then there would be no reason to purchase the program...

Dale - Perhaps I am misunderstanding the trial version's purpose. The web site says it is good for 15 days; nothing about limited functionality. Presumably it will cease working after that, which is fine. I can't see any reason to expect the boot CD to not be similarly time limited. If so, then you would buy the program. It doesn't make sense to me why somebody would offer you a trial version to see how it works and then block it from actually working. Kurt ps: Looks like somebody has tweaked the CIS software again - using the plain text editor, all the paragraph breaks are being removed. Sorry if this is all scrunched up.

The INSTALLED version is. The CD has never been "timed"...

I'm not defending Acronis here, just reporting what I have read previously on their website. I agree, their website lacks the inforation that used to be present about the trial. No idea why that is, however...

The installed version is a Windows app. The code on the boot CD runs in Linux. The ISO image is pre-built and merely burned to a CD when you run the process from within Windows...

The Windows portion of the Application works fine in the 15 day period. That ois how most users will use the product...

Ah, thanks for the explaination - I saw the same phenom from another poster and wondered what was happening...

Just following up on Drive Image for DOS - It recognizes that my external hard drive (IEEE 1394) is physically present, but does not recognize the partition structure / logical drives thereon. Which is odd because that structure is a mirror of my internal hard drive, and it has no problem recognizing that. Oh well... thanks for the suggestion.

Intetesting - is there anything "special" about the partitions on that drive (Linux, etc.)?

I just found this option - absolutely NO idea if the CD it creates will do backups. Can't beat the price (FREE):
