If you have a CompuServe Classic account (a numbered ID that might or
might not have an alphanumeric equivalent) you need to take action
before the end of this month. Everyone with a Classic account was sent
email about the changes, but I know a lot of people don't check their
Classic email boxes any more, so I'm reprinting the announcement here
in case anyone has not heard the news yet.
After many years of providing online services, we regret to inform
you that as of June 30, 2009 the CompuServe Classic service will no
longer operate as an Internet Service Provider. We hope this does not cause you an inconvenience.
Note that this shutdown only relates to the CompuServe Classic
service. The CompuServe 2000 service will continue to operate as it
does today.
We're aware that this change may raise several questions for you.
Here's what this will mean:
DO YOU NEED AN INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER?
* If you need dial-up Internet access, there are two options you may wish
to
consider.
Netscape Internet Service (as low as $9.95 per
month)
+ Includes 1 month FREE trial!
+ Unlimited dial-up access
AOL ($11.99 per month)
+ Includes 1 month FREE trial!
+ Unlimited dialup access
+ 24/7 tech support
+ McAfee security software
+ Unlimited email storage
ACCESS AND BILLING INFORMATION:
* The last day you will be able to access your CompuServe Classic account
will be June 30, 2009. Your dial-up access will no longer be available after
this
date.
* We urge you to immediately forward, back up, move or otherwise
copy to a location outside the CompuServe Classic system any stored
data you wish to
keep. This data will be inaccessible after the CompuServe Classic service is closed on June 30.
date, you will be unable to access or retrieve any images, files,
or other material stored in the Ourworld service. Any content you wish
to retain must
be saved to a new location before June 30.
* Your final monthly charge for the CompuServe Classic service will occur on your June billing date.
EMAIL AVAILABILITY:
* We have created a new email system where you will be able to continue
using your existing CompuServe Classic email address. This new email service is
available to you at no charge - but you will need to provide your own
Internet access.
* Some of the benefits of the new email system include:
+ Unlimited storage lets you keep as many messages as you want
+ Ability to receive large messages (up to 16MB per message)
+ Industry leading spam and virus protection to help eliminate threats
and hassles
+ Mail filters that allow you to store and organize mail
+ Open accessibility and compatibility with IMAP & POP3
+ Seamless integration w/ AIM for instant messaging
* The transition to the new mail system started on May 18.
* In order to migrate your existing mailbox and CompuServe Classic email address, you will need to complete the following steps:
1. Between May 18 and June 30, go to http://member.compuserve.com/mailcenter (either through the CompuServe Classic client or through your Internet
browser). NOTE: If you do not use the CompuServe Classic client to access the
service, you will be asked to provide your CompuServe Classic User ID and password (or your POP3 email account information).
2. You will be shown your current CompuServe Classic email address
and any alias that may have been set up for your POP3 mailbox (if one
exists).
Click on the "Migrate my CS Classic Email" link to begin the migration
process.
3. You will be taken to the new email system. You'll need to
agree to the Terms of Service and provide various pieces of information
(e.g. new email
password, zipcode / postal code, birthday, and an Account Security
Question).
4. After providing the information in step 3, you will have access
to the new email system (and any messages from the old CompuServe
Classic email
system).
The new email system can be accessed from anywhere, requiring only
a Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) and an Internet
connection.
If you use POP3 to access your email, you will need to provide
update dserver information to your client software - including any new
password
you chose - and the following POP3 / IMAP client settings:
pop.csi.com; port 110 (SSL = port 995)
imap.csi.com; port 143 (SSL = port 993)
If you are using a POP3 or IMAP client, you will also need to
configur eyour SMTP, or outbound email connection, to use
"smtp.csi.com; port 587".
NOTE: This new SMTP server will require you to supply your email address and password to send mail.
(Note from Marte: Pay close attention to what the migration screen
tells you your new account name is, because you will need to enter that
correctly if you pick up your emails via POP or IMAP)
