Nowdays whenever I do DISK CLEANUP, the internal fan blows warm air but that doesn't bother me but if there are many files to clean up and it runs longer, the air becomes very hot. Why is that, anyhow? That's the only time the fan blows hot or warm air.

Sounds as if it is taking a lot of processing to do what you have checked off for it to do in Disk Cleanup, or in establishing the list for you to choose from.

If you did it more frequently ... or not at all .... then it would not blow so hot? <s>

Hi Hugh,

I have to do cleanup every so often to compress files or they will pile up (It once piled up over a million files, I kid you not)and now I do it every chance I get before they pile upagain. What happens to my computer if I dont do regular disk cleanup?

ONE MILLION FILES? My mind is so boggled that I cannot make any suggestions .... Are you surprised it heats up?

I don't do that compression but I do use the Cleanup part of it.

What is the essential reason we perform "Disk Cleanup" ?What happens if you NEVER do a "Disk Cleanup". Won't the hard drive space be cluttered with olf files. I do the procedure via the Start menu.

Nothing terrible since the amount of space for say Temp files, one of the category that can be cleaned up when you run Disk Cleanup, is set to a certain number of MB or GB (and you can alter that).

I don't know what version of Windows you have or how it is set up so when you say you run Disk Cleanup from the Start Menu it's not something I'm used to seeing or using. When I do run it I open My Computer, select the drive I want to clean up (if there is more than one drive) and right mouse click on it and select Properties on the menu. There is a button for Disk Clean there and when you click on it it runs and produces a check list showing how much it can remove in the different categories so you can select or unselect what you want done. Then you OK it and it cleans up.

The Compress files is another thing altogether and is an option on that Properties tab I mentioned. Knowing Microsoft it is probably checked by default and one of the first things I do is uncheck it since I am not short of drive space and compressing and decompressing to use all take time.

What kind of computer are you talking about? A laptop from what you say about the fan? How large is the hard drive? How much free space is on it when you open that Properties tab?

What kind of applications to you have on the PC? Do they generate a lot of files? Or do you store a lifetime of photos? I can't imagine getting over a million files.

Remember, you did ask...

I NEVER bother with that routine.  I consider it senseless and useless and my systems run just fine without it...

'>>Won't the hard drive space be cluttered with olf files

SO?  Like that has any real meaning in the grand scheme of things?  I see many users devote copius amounts of time and energy "cleaning" when it;s not really needed AND, improper cleaning, CAN ve harmful to a system...

If you are experiencing "performance issues" then focus on those and get them resolved.  Disk Cleanup won;t make a difference there...

Clarification needed. You can limit the size of Temporary Internet Files through a setting in your browser. You can also limit the size of the Recycle Bin. You can't limit the size of files that may be dumped in your \Windows\Tmp directory. You have to clean those out yourself, or have Disk Cleanup do it for you. Many programs don't clean up after themselves properly and leave files in the Tmp directory.

Once again, a very harsh judgment for no good reason. Disk Cleanup is very conservative and doesn't remove needed files. It's an easy way for "average users" to get rid of temp files that *you* and *I* clean up manually. There's no reason a system tool can't do the job.

Thanks for the clarification. I use Disk Cleanup judiciously from time to time so it never gets excessive.

So what?  As I asked before:  IS MS so bloody SAXRED that whatever they push on unsuspecting users "above reproach"???

Acerage users couls care less about their HD (and do).  Mention "cleaning" and you open Pandora's Box.  Or, do you not see the messages here about "broken systens due to cleaning"???

Consider a relatively typical AOL user's drive. Aol kept breaking so she kept reinstalling. The install would freeze, and she pushed the Off button.

There were tens of thousands of Temp files.

Your point???

Why slog through a process that could care less about TEMP files, instead, leading the user to [falsely] believe that the world will end if they do not run that process religiously???

Surely you jest! Someone who reinstalls AOL a dozen or so times expecting something different to happen the 17th time will remember all that? A good show on Microsoft's part that they offer something she can manage to use.

If a user's system breaks because of cleaning, it's not due to Disk Cleanup, which as I said is very conservative. The average user gets in trouble by doing it him- or herself, just looking for files that seem like they could be eliminated. Or they may run some "cleaner" of dubious value, which may be very aggressive, unlike Disk Cleanup.

You seriously expect an "average user" to remember your instructions for finding the Temp directory and deleting the files? Not gonna happen.

>> Why slog through a process that could care less about TEMP files >>

Au contraire! Disk Cleanup mostly goes after TEMP files. It's simply an easy way for a user to get rid of temp files, excessive IE temp files, and such. It doesn't "clean" the Registry or dump so-called duplicate files. Plus the user can determine what Disk Cleanup gets rid of.

Yup -- jusst click on "View files" <s> Of course our dearly beloved average user would not have much idea of what he was seeing since so many temp files seem to have heiroglyphics as filenames .... <s>

might be time to have your spectacles prescription checked.

last week I was asked to help out....  absolutely pure out of the box never done anything but plug in (Vista) pc.

828,3xx temp files
it's not a typo - eight-hundred-twenty-eight thousand + pieces of garbage.

go thee forth and benchmark the default indexing that many files.

I suppose if you never use the computer this is not a source of problems, the rest of "the masses" get right cotton picking burdened.

a bit like defragging - the manufacturer of the operating system recommends it - but per Dale's Universe it's hogwash.

might be time to have your spectacles prescription checked.
