<<<(USATODAY)  United 93 (* * * * out of four) is an unflinching, powerfully visceral and haunting portrait of the tragic events aboard one of the terrorist-commandeered flights on the fateful morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

Painstakingly researched from reports of flight recordings, air traffic controllers and aviation officials, as well as cellphone calls made to family members by some of the passengers, it is undeniably the most gut-wrenching and captivating film released this year.

What writer/director Paul Greengrass has re-created is not only the devastating human drama aboard the flight but also the reaction of authorities on land as they become acutely aware of — and powerless to stop — the horror of the developments.

Filmed in real time and shot with handheld cameras, it has the urgency and grit of a documentary rather than a big-studio movie. We will never know exactly what transpired aboard that flight, but United 93 gives us an educated guess.>>>

Will you watch it?

At first I was not going to pay to see it. Then this week kevin and i
went to the movies and the previews aired along with testimonies from the
victims families and they want it to be aired so that we know the story
from the families, directly. Also my understanding is that some of the proceeds
go to the family members. Maybe they have already made a ton of money
off of the death of their loved, by donations or cover stories, etc but
that doesn't concern me.

Well hi Natra! I'd be watching anything connected to 9-11......wouldn't have to coax me........To this day I still feel like I dreamed the whole thing, unbelievable ......so I can imagine how people feel about losing someone that day! MY GAWD! I had heard Todd Beamer's dad on some talk show say that he hoped the public would watch it....that it's as accurate as it could get....

Same here..............No money in the world could bring their loved ones back.........

Hi Merzi.....because of my schedule I usually wait for the DVD, also, but not this one........I'm taking the whole family, but they have to buy their own popcorn if they have the stomach for it.

Hello again, Ms. Fox! Good topic!
Yes, I will be going to see this movie as soon as it hits the theater here in my small "city". It's our only theater which by the way I work at. (still have to pay the admission though, lol)

It is hard to believe that nearly 5 years have gone by, but it still feels like yesterday. Ok, I may live in Canada, but just like the assassination of JFK I can very well remember where I was and what I was doing at the time.

Sure, it may be a controversial movie, and maybe some of the family and friends of the victims might be offended by it, but I believe it should be viewed by everyone so as not to forget that terrorism is real and not about to go away anytime soon.

The majority of the civilized population seeks world peace; but some countries don't know what this is...all they know is war, killing, torture and so on. Therefore, a movie of this calibre should bring to light the dangers we face under any or all circumstances. Our world is not a bed of roses, and it is high time that we all get serious and be aware of what is going on.

The passengers on Flight 93 knew what they had to do. I commend them for their bravery and they are all heros in my eyes. It is unfortunate that they had to lose their lives for the sake of others. ( Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd...)

This movie will be heart-wrenching but it is a story that must be told...and we should all "listen", remember...and never forget!

Hi Merzi

It has been about 1 yrs since I last wrote to you, I think.
I hope you are doing well.

Flight 93. I went with kevin the day after it came out, last Saturday.
It was overwhelming as is any true story ie Peral Harbor, The Hollocaust,
etc. I think it will be nominated for best picture or some other category
or it should, in my opinion. None of the actors were big names, that I
recognised anyways, but the movie was well written and well directed.
I found it to be powerful, and gut wrenching.
When it ended, the theater was silent for a very long time and not one person
got o ut of their seat, for several minutes, you could hear a pin drop, so to
speak!
Several people were moved and were crying, I was one of the people in tears,
my husband was speechless.
I don't think I will watch it a second time, or not anytime soon and I don't
think it is age appropriate for young children.
I realize it is a historical event, but in my opinion, not something I would
let my kids watch, the fact that it happened and that they know it happened
in their lifetime is enough.

I have mixed emotions on wether to see it or not ,I was very disturbed when that happened and as far as I'm concerned them people or guys really aboard that plane still have not received the accolades they deserve ,They saved this country a terrible embarrassment plus the life's of countless people at there intended target and millions of dollars of damage. They certanly are true heroes . I dont agree with making this movie though maybe in years to come but not now .

Morning navy,  you & I are in the same school of thought about this new movie on Flight 93.  To just think about what those people did is overwhelming let alone look at a reenactment of it.  It would probably create more anger in me than I care to deal with right now.

You are correct about the hero's of flight 93.
The only reason I went to see it is because i knew that some
of the proceed went to the families and I have donated many times
for this cause. I was at the movies watching another movie when
the trailers came out for flight 93 and the surviving family members
were on camera speaking about why they wanted this movie to be made.

The movie was well made and really moved me. The ending was of course
obvious, but well worth seeing.

I just cant take this stuff anymore I was a wreck for a
week when it happened and hearing that girl call
her husband and know she was dead tore me up .I shed tears if a squirrel gets killed anymore ,I guess im a softy ,I like movies that make you laugh and be happy
Same with TV I hate them damn movies that some one is after you with a knife and going to cut you up in little pieces knife , Give me Jacky Gleson. or John Wayne, Red Skelton, ,Marks Brothers . or Dean Martin ,These kind of movies made you happy and alive
life is full of heart ache, why go get more and pay to make you sad .
Even though the victims relatives received some of the proceeds I don't belive it should have been shown ,honor them yes but don't exploit them .

This is kind of confusing to me, because the name of this thread is "Flight 93" - the name of the made-for-TV movie on a cable channel, which I didn't see and have no plans to see (I don't get cable stations), while "United 93" is the name of the theatrical film, already available on DVD (I plan to see this one). Will someone please correct me if I'm wrong - I got this information from another forum.

Hi Frank.I'm a little confused myself because I went out and purchased the video (DVD)at Wal-Mart today(Flight 93 The Movie)....brought it home and watched it and just before I clicked on Comp. was comparing it to the clips of the  movie advertised at our Mall theatre and they are not the same. I haven't seen the theatre version as yet thinking this video was it so I'll be seeing it at the Mall sometime this coming week......The actors are not the same and I noticed in the theatr clip that the terrorists were not wearing headbands..........I'll keep checking and see what else I can find on it..........I have seen the video twice and both times I've ended up in tears, so what's a little mascara run, right?

I know this thread is a little old but I had to respond seeing as I watched the movie for the first time last night on HBO.

On the morning of 9/11 I was sitting in a local hospital room where I had just swallowed a radiation pill with 29 rads or millirads to burn out my thyroid gland.  I was told it was the highest they could give me that would do the job without hospitalizing me.  I had to stay at the hospital for a few hours so every so often they could moniter the radiation emanating from my neck and thyroid gland to insure it stayed within safe bounderies.  As I and my wife were sitting there we glanced up to the tv in the waiting room to see the first tower already in flames, about that time we watched the second plane hit the other tower.  I turned to my wife and stated as I'm sure alot of people had also already figured out by that time and said "Those were no accidents."   We raise siamese cats as registered breeders, so when by the time they sent us home with instructions that the radiation that would eventually burn my thyroid gland out could still be potentially dangerous to small children or small animals, newspapers were already hitting the stands. I needed to be seperated for three days until the radiation dropped to safe levels. Including seperate bathroom and shower.  This was no big deal seeing as we had a spare bedroom and bath.  I have never watched the news because personally I find most of it depressing, but I do selectivly read what I choose online.  But for three solid days and nights my eyes were constantly glued to the television.  My wife even threatened to remove the tv I was so obsessed, I was an emotional wreck.  Since that time I have had to seek grief counciling and on advisement avoid most issues regarding 9/11. So needless to say when United 93 was released I avoided it like the plague, until last night that is.  It was late and I logged off my computer and went downstairs and started watching, I didn't know what it was at first but it became real clear very shortly and for some reason just as it was on 9/11/01 I sat there eyes fixed doggedly on the tv, mesmerized by the horror of what was happening and practically reliving what had happened that day to the point where the tears again gushed out of my eyes.

What amazes me though is that when I woke up this morning for some reason I can't explain.  I felt better, don't get me wrong I am still horrified by what happened and the loss of life and what those people had to have gone through.  I knew of  what they had put together about what happened on United Flight 93 but actually seeing how they portrayed it and the courage that those people demonstrated I assume did something personally for me.  I can't explain it I'm no therapist or psychologist....thats why I pay one to help me through it. But for whatever reason I actually feel better today than I have in years. I guess this week when I go to my grief therapy I'll have something positive to discuss with my therapist. I doubt I will be able to watch it again its just to much of a strain on me going through it.  But I definitly don't regret seeing it last night. If you get a chance or havent watched it yet.  Just my recommendation, that and .50 cents still wont buy you a cup of coffee anywhere.....but watch it maybe if your having problems like I had it will help. I don't know.

Hi atescal..............Welcome to the crime Forum and thank you for sharing your wonderful story with us.

Am hoping not only are your physical problems cured (with the radiation treatments)but that you're finally coming to grips with the horrible traumatic experience of 9/11.

I, as well as millions of others, still shed those tears for the victims of that horrible tragedy that we were faced with on that day and months to come that will be remembered for the rest of our lives.

As for the movies made about 9/11 not only did I see most of them  several times over but went out and purchased the DVDs and did catch Flight 93 on HBO as you did...

<<<But for whatever reason I actually feel better today than I have in years. I guess this week when I go to my grief therapy I'll have something positive to discuss with my therapist.>>>

May I suggest that you print out "your story" and read it to your therapist? "Your story" has certainly made my day and am hoping you'll come back and give us an update.

It's been said, "Give time, time" and you're proof that it works.

Hi Foxy and thank you.  To answer your question about my thyroid condition I was very fortunate, in 2003 I was one of I guess a very few people that this happens to.  My thyroid not only grew back, but grew back healthy and fully functional. Which is a true blessing because I no longer have to take the synthroid daily  (I am really bad about taking medication, think most men usually are. LOL)

As for the movies made about 9/11 not only did I see most of them  several times over but went out and purchased the DVDs and did catch Flight 93 on HBO as you did...

If you don't mind me asking have you seen World Trade Center? If so how was it?

I see my therapist tomorrow and have already printed it out, she's really been alot of help and we have a very open professional relationship.  Currently she is on staff at our local Army Base where she is counciling soldiers who are returning from Iraq.  But still has time to council others like myself.

I have long been a student of history, and one thing that 9/11 did for me was to open my eyes to what people must have felt and gone through during Pearl Harbor and other simular times in our nations history and even though we may be a politically divided country. During those times of crisis we always seem to find the strength to band together and help each other no matter what our differences may be.
