If this has already been discussed and if that thread is still on this forum, please direct me to it. Otherwise, what is the best of disposing of used insulin injection needles ?

Thanks.

I don't know whether it is here in the forum somewhere, and I don't have the time at present to search for you. There is an "Advanced Search" tool in the right hand column that you wish to try.

As for the disposal, I am fortunate enough not to require injections at this time...just BG testing a couple of times a day. That means that I do need to safely dispose of the used test strips and the finger-pricking lancets.

The local fire station has supplied me with a safety design "sharps" disposal containter, roughly the size and shape of a metro city phonebook. This container would also be appropriate for injection needles, I believe, as it has an illustration of a syringe/needle.

I might suggest contacting your own local fire station to inquire.

Best regards,  4merCL

There are a number of such threads.. I did a search on "Sharps" and got a lot of 'em.

First if you have not logged in via the NETSCAPE portal click on the following URL and log in here

You use the same log in as for Community.compuserve.com but since I"m logged in via the netscape portal all the links are "netscape"

Actually. it's a very common question.. Here is what I do.

I have a pair of what we electronics types call "Dikes" (Diagonal cutting pliers) in my medical KIT.. Way less expensive then the popular "needle clippers)  I cut the plastic, just above the needle, And toss the sharp parts into a proper SHARPS container I got from Gall's (Back before local pharmacies had such a good selection of them   So far, I've not filled the gallon container.  (The barrel goes in regular trash,,, which by the way is machine disposed of where I usually am)

Getting sharps containers depends on where you are, I believe. 4mer gets them from the fire department, Dot has to buy them, and I get mine (free) from Walgreen's.... and then I take the full container back to Walgreen's for disposal.

Ask around ...

Each community differs in its requirements for sharps disposal.  Where I live, it is no longer legal to put sharps containers of any kind in the trash.  They must be returned to a recycling facility to be dealt with.  (Fortunately, many pharmacies provide this service.)  It'd be best to call your local health department or check your city's web site to see what the law requires.

The city where I live has hazardous-waste collections twice a week.  I can take full, sealed sharps containers to them for disposal and they'll give me new ones for free.  I clip the needles off my syringes using a needle clipper (which can store up to 1500 needles) and put the rest into a sharps container.  I put the caps back on used lancets and drop them in the sharps container as well.

You can buy sharps containers at almost any pharmacy.  BD has a sharps container that comes with its own mailer so you can mail the container to them for disposal, but not surprisingly, those containers cost more.

Dot has to buy them

Our disposal place will accept any heavy-walled plastic container, such as a laundry detergent bottle.  I prefer the little square red ones that I buy.  We have to tape the container securely when full and mark as biohazardous waste or medical waste.  Some drugstores will accept them, and firehouses in our area will accept them, too.  After all, they have the rescue truck, which has to have a sharps disposal program, so citizens can dispose through their program.

I use pens, which have small needles.  The empty pens themselves can go into the ordinary trash.  Lancets should go into the sharps container.  I keep several containers located in places where I might be when I check or give myself a shot, so I don't have to leave anything lying around for the kitties to find to play with.  It takes me a long time to fill a liter container, as I use three needles a day, and occasionally a fourth one.

Dear Friend,

Did the thoughts some members shared help settle your mind about how you or someone you care about might dispose of syringes?  Even more importantly, though, are things going well for you?

Hoping to hear how you are,

         Paula
