Do Americans Still Support Obama?

Despite claims by some of his critics that he's losing support among the American public, a new poll shows most Americans still approve of how President Barack Obama is doing -- in numbers within 1 percent of a similar poll a year ago.  But Fox is claiming his support has dropped markedly.  Whose polls do you believe -- and why?

Critics of the president on Fox News are today saying that Mr. Obama could be in trouble for having supposedly "raised the stakes" in today's off-year elections.  And Fox wants people to ask whether this is a "Referendum on Obama."

Yesterday, Fox even touted a poll which they said justified their headline, "Fox News Poll: 43 Percent Would Re-Elect Obama October 18, 2009."

But today's poll by CNN/Opinion Research Corporation shows "Obama's approval rating of 54 percent is nearly identical to the 53 percent of the vote he won a year ago."

And "His approval rating among liberals is 7 points higher than the number of liberals who voted for him," they observe.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the president's approval rating among conservatives is down ten points in their latest poll.

What do you believe Americans are really thinking about how the president is doing right now?

At university, the prof -- who was a nationally-respected expert in the field -- took pains to teach us about what he called "outliers."

He described them as polls which run outside the range of other polls on a particular topic.

Do you think it's possible that Fox's folks were looking for a particular result when they came up with that poll appearing to show President Obama's approval ratings dramatically lower than that of other polls?

What about Britain's Sky News, which is running this headlne:

US State Elections May Act As Obama Poll

Is this another attempt by Sir Rupert to convince Sky's audience that President Obama's support is dramatically declining?

46% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) disapprove."

The Rasmussen Poll is based on 'likely voters'. That accounts for the difference in the polls of the general population.

Most polls show a significant drop in approval from the time he entered office with nearly a 70% approval rating.

The ABC News poll said that Obama has fallen faster than any president in modern history.

What do you believe Americans are really thinking about how the president is doing right now?

From what I read many still approve of him in a personal manner but the numbers are dwindling in the job performance aspect.

Meanwhile, a different view from across the pond suggests that today's elections may test the _mood_ of the voters -- rather than how they feel about President Obama.  Here's a headline from the BBC this morning:

Elections test US voters' mood

What do _you_ think?

Thanks for your comments, Sam, including:

I didn't see that.  Do you happen to have a cite or link for it?

Thanks!

Very best wishes,

Barack Obama sees worst poll rating drop in 50 years

"The decline in Barack Obama's popularity since July has been the steepest of any president at the same stage of his first term for more than 50 years. "   (Gallup Poll)

Thanks for your comments.  What are you hearing?  Are people you know expressing growing dissatisfaction with Mr. Obama?

Yes. While many I know are willing to give him a chance they can't understand why all the deficit spending and trying to force a healthcare bill into law. Even those I know who supported Obama are questioning this.

Do you think he's losing public support?

Yes, for his policies. People still view him favorably in a personal sense.

Yes I do. The members of my family< mostly in their mid and late 30's realize now that they made a horrible mistake and are afraid of where he is taking the country and economy now. He has grown the government and deficit exponentially, (can anyone speak chinese!!!!)Anyone with half a brain can see this man wants to be KING, with his own "Army".

Of course we do, it's only been 10 months after all.

If Mr. Obama was the 'messiah' the snide insist upon calling him, the changes would have already been made, but he's human just like the rest of us.

Give him time, things are already picking up, except in the employment sector.  Things *will* get better.

*LOL* thought we were supposed to be afraid of speaking Arabic (at least before the election).  I cannot believe people.  Could you turn around a failing small business in 10 months?  Bet not; what do you expect a president to do for a *country* in 10 months.

That is dam near a quarter of his Presidency,  guess it just depends on how you look at it.  LOL    It's not the 10 months I worry about but the 10 years that fallow.

Yep. It takes a lot of work and some luck but it can be done.

Bet not; what do you expect a president to do for a *country* in 10 months.

Regarding Obama, nothing.
