China Demands That You Forget Tibet

Tibet's Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is now 74 years old and in declining health.  But the People's Republic of China still covets not only his Himalayan domain; it also wants what is, for him, the core of his life.  They want him to renounce his title.  And China won't stop until he's given up or he's dead.  Why do you think giant Communist China so desperately wants his title?

Tenzin Gyatso was barely more than a child when Mao's Red Army brigades invaded the peaceful Buddhist mountain kingdom in 1950.  And neither he nor many others recognized China's claim to the vast territory.

But China's economic as well as military power quickly overcame initial objections by most countries.

Now China exercises its enormous economic clout in a so far vain attempt to force other countries to refuse admission of the Dalai Lama into their countries.

Today, Beijing is using strong language in an attempt to force neighboring India into barring a visit by the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama himself is reported by Voice of America to be accusing China of Misleading World About Tibet.

And the Times of India reports:

"There is no strain in bilateral ties," foreign secretary Nirupama Rao told reporters here when asked whether the Dalai Lama's scheduled visit to Arunachal Pradesh Nov 8 had strained ties between the two countries.

"Our position is very clear," Rao said while alluding to New Delhi's stance that the Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile in the hill resort of Dharamsala for the last five decades, can go anywhere in India provided he does not indulge in political activities.

Why do you think a nation as large and powerful as China is still pressing the issue of the Dalai Lama after more than half a century?

To Balance China, India Turns to Japan

TOKYO -- Those seeking political symbolism for Asia's faultlines need look no further than the Dalai Lama's press conference here on Saturday -- complete with criticism of China, and delivered before he heads off for an extended stay in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Perched on India's frontier with China, Arunachal Pradesh's disputed border has been the focus of growing tensions between New Delhi and Beijing. On Friday, former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra became the latest in a series of respected Indian commentators warning of possible Chinese military action....

I wonder what Tibet has that makes it attractive to China? Minerals, Oil, Gas? China apparently is the new Colonial Power in the world! They already own the United States, Manchuria and control the Panama Canal along with Tibet, and there are skirmishes along the Manchurian border with Russia. They have a large presence in several Central and South American countries and are drilling for oil off the coast of Cuba.

Whoever controls the heights also often controls the plains, which would make Tibet very attractive to China.  And Tibet is still seen by many Buddhists as the source of guidance, which China would like to control.

China's merciless invasion of Tibet and the slaughter or repression of her people stand out as one of the low points in the history of this planet -- especially as those heinous acts were committed in full view of Britain, the United States and other "leaders" of the "free world."

Communist China invaded Tibet because it could, because the "free world" appeared helpless in the face of the hordes of troops of Mao's fledgling regime.

Are we now reaping the bitter fruit of the seeds which we helped sow?

    Very best wishes,

           -  John

    Well said.

...which would make Tibet very attractive to China.  And Tibet is still seen by many Buddhists as the source of guidance, which China would like to control.

And did we let down ourselves as well as Tibetan Buddhists and others when we permitted China to invade and terrorize Tibet and destroy her culture and religious heritage?

In what ways might we be paying today for our failures of six decades ago?

    Very best wishes,

           -  John
